Weekly Recap: Active Recovery

Some of you might know I had abdominal partial hysterectomy surgery August 18. My two week post-op appointment was August 31 and my doctor said I could do anything that didn’t hurt, but not to lift any more than 15 pounds. I was excited since I’d mostly been counting steps for two weeks. I wanted to start walking so Friday, September 1,  I walked three miles. I was super happy, but it took me a looooong time to walk that far. 

Saturday September 2, I walked 5k for Hurricane Harvey victims. I decided walking hills was too hard (I live in a super hilly neighborhood) so I’ve been walking across the dam for a mile and on the flat roads for one mile. I’ve been pretty much walking the same loop for a week. A week ago Sunday 2 mile walk. This is my dam right across from my house. The view from the left side of the dam. Just beautiful! Labor Day, I walked 3 miles, but decided to cut down to 30 minute walks the rest of the week. I’ve walked every day except for last Wednesday. Hubby and I went to Hattiesburg which is about a 45-60 minute drive. I got my nails done, we had lunch, and went to Lowes. The ride to and from Hattiesburg was very uncomfortable. My incision just hurts. I don’t know how else to explain it. I feel my best when I’m walking. Sometimes there is a “pulling” or “stinging” feeling which is why I mostly keep my walks for two miles. I got home from Hattiesburg and went straight to sleep! Thursday’s two miles. 

I celebrated 3 weeks post-op Friday with 3 miles. It took me 54 minutes. I don’t mind being slow. I am really enjoying being outside and the weather has been so much cooler. Two mile walk with my big fur baby Chuck yesterday! 

A little over two mile walk this morning. I’ve had a lot on my mind thinking about those in the path of Hurricane Irma and my friend told me some sad news yesterday. I wish I could do more and I’ve tried to help with Hurricane Harvey victims as much as I’m able. Even driving to pick my kids up from school is uncomfortable. I still have not been able to grocery shop or lift things. Bending and pulling seem to irritate my incision. I don’t miss running as much as I thought I would. It is simply not possible right now. I wince at the thought of trying again! Less than 3 weeks to go now before I attempt running and walking! 

I’ve logged a little over 23 walking miles this month so far! Woo hoo! 

What are you training for?  This would be my first week of half marathon training for St. Jude December 2,  but I will be walking the miles this week. Not sure about longer mileage just yet.

  1. It looks like you’ve been enjoying those peaceful walks around the lake! There is no need to rush back to running on a certain date. I think there will come a time when you feel like you can run, and want to run again, and it will happen naturally. In the mean time…just enjoy the walking (and singing — I’ve seen your stories!). 😉

  2. I’m currently training for Disney’s Wine & Dine Half in November! I hope your pain gets better soon! I’ve never been sidelined from surgery, but I think you’re powering through great!

  3. I’m sorry you’re still having so much pain and discomfort. I’m sure it’s frustrating. I think you are smart to keep most walks to 30 minutes – you can over do it walking! I hope your recovery continues this week.

  4. I totally get what you’re experiencing…recovery from surgery is tough! My surgery was June 29th (I don’t think I’ll ever forget that date LOL). I was told “no running for at least two months,” but it’s been a little longer. The suture scar feels tight sometimes, and that kind of freaks me out. ALso, my knee joint is stiff from the limited bending it’s done the past three months. I miss running, but not as much as I though I would….it’s just a necessary evil NOT running for now. Hoping I get the surgeon’s “thumbs-up” this week 😉

  5. I had that same incision when I had a fibroid tumor removed years ago. Be patient with it because it’s a stinker. But you will get back to running. I feel the same way about all the hurricane victims. I’ve written checks to the Red Cross and donated where I can but still…

  6. I’m glad you’re enjoying the walks! I’ve never been sidelined by surgery but when I was very pregnant and then immediately postpartum I walked a ton and it felt so good. I really took up an appreciation for walking and also realized just how intense running can be (when your’e in great shape you forget how hard it is!).

  7. I hope things progress well for your healing and recovery. Pain is no fun and you are so active that I am sure it is all very difficult for you. Sounds like you are doing well with coping.

  8. Good job on your walks. In February of 2014 I had abdominal surgery that left me with a 7-inch incision across my lower abdomen. With little training (a few long walks) I completed the Chicago Marathon just 8 months later. I walked the whole. damn. thing. and finished in 6:27:10, just 3 minutes, 40 seconds under course cutoff time. And I got the same medal as everyone else. You will get there!
